MacLaren Dichroic Glass Jewelry  - How We Do the VooDoo that We Do

                            Glass Fusing -The Process

The process for the jewelry is called glass fusing. It starts with sheets of hand-rolled Bullseye Glass cut and layered.
It is then put into a kiln and fired to  1400-1550 degrees depending on the look I wish to achieve. After it is removed
from the kiln it goes through a cold working process which could include grinding, drilling and polishing. It is then
assembled into the jewelry piece using silver and gold findings.

                Dichroic Glass-  The Materials

The sparkly glass we use is called Dichroic Glass. It is 50 micro-thin layers of different metals sealed onto clear or black
Bullseye Glass. The colors shift when it is turned and also when it is fired.

Dichroic Glass was created by NASA for use on astronauts face masks. They needed the astronaut to be protected from
radiation while on space walks but still able to see. They coated the masks with micro-thin layers of pure gold and that
was the start of it all!
